Two people are unaccounted for and another is badly injured after a landslide at a house in Papamoa

Emergency services were called to Welcome Bay Road about 4.15am.

A number of houses in the area are being evacuated.

Nearby, the New Zealand Defence Force called in police to help rescue a number of people stuck in a vehicle, in fast flowing water on Waitao Road.

Police say those involved are in a Defence Force Unimog and are safe, but will need to be airlifted out.

Police are asking people in the Western Bay of Plenty to avoid all unnecessary travel.
