Kentucky police hunting suspect after people shot in traffic on I75 highway, south of Lexington

The local sheriff's office has named a 32-year-old man as a person if interest in connection with the shootings, saying he should be considered armed and dangerous.

Police in rural Kentucky, in the United States, are searching for a suspect after a number of people were wounded by gunfire while driving down an interstate highway.

The incident began on Saturday evening at about 6pm local time, when officers responded to reports of someone taking pot shots at vehicles on a rural stretch of the I75, south of Lexington.

Local media reported the shots were fired at the drivers from a nearby wooded area or overpass, though police are yet to confirm these details.

Randall Weddle, the mayor of nearby London (a small city of about 8,000 people), said seven people had been hurt — though not all of those were shot, with some injured in a car crash.

"There are no deceased at this time. No-one was killed from this, thankfully, but we ask that you continue to pray," Mr Weddle said.

Police are yet to provide details about the number or nature of any casualties, however, the Laurel County Sheriff's office named Joseph Couch, a 32-year-old man, as a person of interest in connection with the shooting.

Police said he should be considered armed and dangerous and people should not approach him.

"The suspect has not been caught at this time and we are urging people to stay inside," Trooper Scottie Pennington of the Kentucky State Police wrote on Facebook.

A stretch of the I75, a major north-south interstate highway that spans the height of the United States, was closed following the incident, but was later reopened even though the suspect is still at large.

Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were called to assist state police and local law enforcement following the shooting, while Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear called for prayers for the victims and said more details would be provided once they were available.
