One week into roadside drug tests being rolled out in Wellington, and only one driver's been pinged so far

The pilot programme which began last Monday, allows Police to screen for cannabis, meth, MDMA, and cocaine with saliva tests, with an aim to roll it out nationwide mid next year.

A 40-year-old man driving with his young daughter was the first person to test positive for meth in his system.

He had his licence suspended for 28 days.

Inspector Peter McKennie told TVNZ the programme's been promising so far.

He says they've done 38 tests, with only one person coming back with an offence.
