A warning for Auckland dog owners to keep pets away from nesting birds on beaches this summer

It's peak nesting season for dotterels, godwits, penguins and other vulnerable species.
Auckland Council's asking people to keep dogs on lead and respect sanctuary zones while chicks learn to survive.
Natural Environment Specialist Services Head, Imogene Basset, says birds can be frightened by just the presence of dogs.
She says none of us would like a dog or car in our baby's bedroom - and that's the same for our native birds.
