Emergency response teams are checking the aftermath of the earthquake off the North Island's East Coast this morning

Emergency response teams are checking the aftermath of the earthquake off the North Island's East Coast this morning

A 7.3 magnitude quake struck at 2.30am, causing a tsunami alert for coastal areas.

    That's now been lifted.

Minister for Emergency Management Kiri Allan says today will provide a better picture of what happened.

She says they'll be assessing any structural or land impacts, and reviewing how the event unfolded.
