Jesy Nelson was "very on edge about everything" when she took her twins home for the first time

The 34-year-old singer gave birth to twin daughters Ocean and Story in May 2025, but it took six months before they were diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy type 1, a rare genetic condition which means they may never walk.

Speaking to Sky News, Jesy shared: "When I took them home, I was very on edge about everything.

"But the one thing I wasn't taking notice of was the movement of the legs ...it took for my mum to spot that sign and that's what's really worrying because we had healthcare visitors come a lot and none of them spotted those signs."

Jesy was told that her twins were "absolutely fine" before she eventually received the diagnosis.

The pop star is grateful that her mum spotted a potential issue, as early diagnosis is key to treatment for spinal muscular atrophy.

Jesy - who first found fame as a member of Little Mix - said: "It wasn't until they got their diagnosis that they were then like we've got to keep them in because they're very underweight and they need to go on feeding tubes ... and now they are still on feeding tubes.

"That just goes to show how little awareness there is about it.

"Thank God for my mum because I dread to think what position I'd be in now if my mum hadn't had said anything to me...

"It's one of those things that I constantly go over and I have to sometimes stop myself from doing it because I will just like drive myself insane."

Jesy has created a new docu-series about her pregnancy experience, and she recently admitted that the project turned out very differently to how she expected.

In a post on Instagram, Jesy wrote: "Isn't it crazy how the universe works, and how it's all divine timing? Last year, I decided that when I fell pregnant, I wanted to document everything.

"I wanted to let cameras into my life and my home, and film what I thought was going to be a really exciting, fun little experience into motherhood that me and my girls could one day sit down and watch back for memories when they are older.

"But little did I know the journey I was about to embark on."
