The hosts look set to miss the services of Blair Tickner for the rest of the series, despite his best day in a white shirt.
He returned career-best figures of four for 32 from 16 overs in helping dismiss the visitors for 205 - the Black Caps are 24 without loss at stumps.
However, Tickner appeared to damage a shoulder diving to save a boundary and was stretchered to hospital.
He joins Matt Henry, Nathan Smith and wicketkeeper Tom Blundell in the casualty ward from this series.
Of the debutants, Michael Rae finished with figures of three for 67 from 18 overs - Mitch Hay took a catch and conceded only two byes in a tidy display with the gloves.
