Reese Witherspoon is surprised by the relationship she has with her children

The Oscar-winning actress - who has Ava, 21, and Deacon, 17, with ex-husband Ryan Phillippe, as well as Tennessee, eight, with her current husband Jim Toth - loves and cherishes the relationship she has with her kids, admitting they help her to "understand the complexities of what it means to be a human now"

She explained: "I never expected the kind of relationship that I have with them, but it's so rewarding to be able to have kids that you can process life with a little bit, and they help me understand the complexities of what it means to be a human now."

Reese, 45, feels "grateful" that her kids are such a huge part of her life.

She told Interview magazine: "I'm really, really grateful that these little humans are in my life. Adult humans."

Last year, meanwhile, Reese hailed the result of the US election, describing it as a "monumental day" for the country.

The Hollywood star hopes Kamala Harris - the Vice President of the US - will serve as an inspiration to women across the US.

She said on Instagram at the time: "Today is a monumental day. No matter what side you are on, let's take a moment to recognize how far women have come in this country. Thinking about all those who shattered glass ceilings and paved the way for a woman to * finally * be Vice President of the United States makes me so emotional. Sojourner Truth. Harriet Tubman. Shirley Chisholm. Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Kamala Harris. I salute them all. And to the young girls of our nation... DREAM BIG. Anything is possible. (sic)"
