Christopher Walken has insisted that he has a "very normal" life

The 81-year-old actor - who has been married to former casting director Georgianne Thon since 1969 - has been a mainstay in Hollywood for decades but even though he has played a number of "troubled" characters in movies such as 'Annie Hall' and 'The Deer Hunter', admitted that he is a very down-to-earth person away from it all

He told The Independent: " I just got identified with, you know, people who are troubled... to say the least.

"The facts of my life are that I've been married for over 50 years, I pay my bills, and I live in a house. I'm a very normal person."

The 'Hairspray' star is now appearing Apple TV+ sci-fi series 'Severance' and the role marks the first time he has played a gay character but admitted that he "doesn't really make a distinction" when it comes to sexuality.

He said: "It's been different for me. Usually, I'm up to no good in movies, but now I'm playing a nice, romantic person.

"And gay, which is a first. Not that it's a big deal, he says. "The truth is that I don't really make a distinction there. Straight? Gay? That's never been very interesting to me. People love each other."

Christopher joked that himself and his on-screen husband - who is played by John Turturro - are "not unlike a married couple" off-screen but a good relationship ultimately "counts for a lot" when it comes to working together.

He said: "John and I - we're not unlike a married couple in real life. We've had our ups and downs together. And when you can finish off each other's sentences or laugh at each other's jokes, it counts for a lot when you're playing parts like these.

"You can tell when people really like each other!"
