Prince William sent Radio 2 DJ a video message on charity challenge final day, urging her to "keep going" after she raised more than £4.1 million for Children in Need

The 43-year-old royal sent huge congratulations to the 50-year-old broadcaster as she approached the end of her gruelling 135-mile Great Northern Marathon Challenge in aid of BBC Children in Need.

William told her: "Sara, massive congratulations for what you are doing. You are so nearly there, just a little bit further.

"I know the people of Pudsey will all come out and welcome you with huge open arms, big hugs... and hopefully, lots of your favourite crumpets. Keep going.

"You've done fantastically well, and the nation is so proud of you."

An exhausted and emotional Sara was delighted with William's inspiring message, saying: "Wow, thanks William, big thank you!

"Thank you, thanks that's very nice!"

Scott Mills surprised Sara with the moving message on the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show on Friday (14.11.25), and the radio DJ revealed to Sara that she has raised more than £4.1 million for Radio 2's Children in Need Challenge.

Helen Thomas, Head of Radio 2, welcomed the uplifting message from Prince William.

She said: "Sara has truly captured the nation's heart - from generous donations to offers of warm hugs, cups of tea, and heartfelt welcomes in every single town and village she's passed through on her gruelling route. Sara's Great Northern Marathon Challenge is one incredible example of BBC broadcasting at its best, bringing the nation together to raise much needed funds for Children in Need.

"The unwavering support from the Radio 2 listeners has been extraordinary, and we couldn't be prouder of Sara and everyone who has cheered her on every step of the way.

"The British public have been utterly amazing - lining the streets as she runs past, with children holding up signs of support and high fiving her all the way. Every act of kindness and every donation has made a real difference."

Sara has been undertaking a five-day gruelling mission to get Pudsey to Pudsey in Leeds by Friday - a symbolic journey carrying BBC Children in Need's iconic mascot from border to heartland.

Covering 135 miles on foot across four counties - Northumberland, Durham, North Yorkshire and West Yorkshire - Sara's Great Northern Marathon Challenge marks Radio 2's longest-ever challenge in terms of duration.

Sara has been relying entirely on her own two feet - whether walking or jogging, no bikes, no cars, just determination, and a generous helping of great northern grit.
