The category three system's expected to bring flash flooding and gales of up to 120 kilometres an hour in some places.

Darwin's closed its public facilities, discharged hospital patients where possible and advised people to take shelter indoors.

Sky News reports the storm's moving in a south-westerly direction.

It could reach category four status overnight tomorrow or early Monday morning.

MetService says it's moving away from New Zealand and is unlikely to have any impact us.
