The Department of Conservation says six-year-old sea lion Tui gave birth on Christmas Day.
Biodiversity Ranger Moss Thompson says rangers expect to see more mother-and-pup pairs along the coast in coming weeks, with around 35 pups anticipated this season.
He's warning the public that sea lions will be crossing the roads and using parks in coastal areas, so temporary changes may be in place - including dog restrictions - to protect them.
