Cooper Woods wins Australia's first gold of 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics

Cooper Woods has stunned the moguls field to win a maiden career title at the 2026 Winter Olympic Games at Milano Cortina.

Australia has won its first medal of the 2026 Winter Olympic Games, with Cooper Woods claiming a stunning moguls gold.

Matt Graham finished fifth and Jackson Harvey eighth as three Australians made the men's super final.

"It hasn't really sunk in the significance," Woods told the Nine Network.

"I'm probably going to go home for a solid hour and sit there and figure out what's going on."

Woods, who has never won a FIS World Cup event and with a single podium from 2024 in his career, stunned the world's best with a series of sublime runs at the Livigno Aerials and Moguls Park on Thursday.

After needing the second-chance qualifying on Thursday evening AEDT, which he topped, the 25-year-old Australian scored a massive 83.60 to head the field into the top eight final.

Going last, Woods scored the same as Canadian legend Mikael Kingsbury 83.71 in the super final, but won on account of his greater score on the turns.

Ikuma Horishima of Japan finished a tight third with 83.44, with Swede Walter Wallberg in fourth.

"I was pretty nervous up top on that last one," Woods said.

"I had a mentality to let it loose today, and then I thought, 'This is the final round and I'm dropping last, what's going on here?'.

"Then my coach Bobby dialled me in."

Graham (80.88) and Harvey (74.93) also impressed as the Australian crowd were given something significant to cheer about following the disappointment of Jakara Anthony the day before.

Woods's victory means Australia has now won seven gold medals in Winter Olympics history.

It is the third moguls gold Australia has won.

Dale Begg-Smith triumphed in 2006 and Anthony took gold in the women's program at the 2022 Beijing Games.
