Major changes to the Emissions Trading Scheme are being made law

Parliament's passed a Bill around preventing wholesale conversions of farms into pine forests under the ETS - a key election commitment from National.

Agriculture and Forestry Minister Todd McClay says it strikes the balance between protecting farmland and keeping confidence in the scheme.

Legislation comes into force from October.
