MetService has released thunderstorm watches for central parts of the North Island

It's warning torrential rain and hail is likely in Waikato, Waitomo, Taumarunui, Taupo and Rotorua.

It says the rainfall could cause flash flooding, especially in low-lying areas like streams, rivers and narrow valleys.

It's warning drivers to be cautious and for people to keep an eye on the weather.
