King Charles III has revealed his cancer treatment will be reduced in the new year, describing the milestone as a "blessing" and testament to "remarkable" medical advances.
It has been almost two years since the king's diagnosis was publicly revealed, and in that time Buckingham Palace has seldom released details about his condition and prognosis.
The monarch made the announcement in a pre-recorded message broadcast in the United Kingdom on Friday evening, local time.
"Indeed, today I am able to share with you the good news that thanks to early diagnosis, effective intervention and adherence to 'doctors' orders', my own schedule of cancer treatment can be reduced in the new year," King Charles said.
"This milestone is both a personal blessing and a testimony to the remarkable advances that have been made in cancer care in recent years; testimony that I hope may give encouragement to the 50 per cent of us who will be diagnosed with the illness at some point in our lives."
It has never been revealed what type of cancer the king was diagnosed with, although it has been confirmed that he does not have prostate cancer.
While it is understood the 77-year-old king's treatment will be significantly reduced next year, it will continue.
"His Majesty has responded exceptionally well to treatment and his doctors advise that ongoing measures will now move into a precautionary phase," a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said.
The royal's diagnosis was revealed in February 2024, and he initially stepped away from public-facing duties, although he resumed some of them two months later. Later that year, he and Queen Camilla embarked on an overseas tour, which included Australia.
The king's daughter-in-law, Catherine, Princess of Wales, had also battled cancer during the monarch's illness, although it was revealed earlier this year she was in remission.
King Charles III's message was delivered as part of a televised cancer charity fundraiser in the UK.
He said he had been "profoundly moved" by the amount of support he had received since his diagnosis, and paid tribute to people in the country living with the disease, and those who support them.
"But I have also learned something that troubles me deeply — at least 9 million people in our country are not up to date with the cancer screenings available to them," the king said.
In the past two years, the monarch has visited multiple cancer research centres, hospitals and support groups, which have been credited with a sharp increase in the number of people in the UK seeking screening measures.
