McLaren driver Oscar Piastri is facing an uphill battle to claim a maiden Formula One world championship, after qualifying fifth for the Las Vegas Grand Prix while main rival and teammate Lando Norris took pole

In a brutal end to a wet qualifying in Vegas, Piastri's hopes of taking top spot ended when the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc went off in front of him and caused a yellow flag on the final lap.

Piastri enters this afternoon's race 24 points behind Norris in the championship...and is trying not to be too deflated.

Liam Lawson will start sixth in Vegas, with the race scheduled to start at five o'clock .
