Demi Lovato "did a lot of healing" while making Child Star

The 33-year-old pop star co-directed the 2024 documentary, which explored the tribulations of child stardom, fame, and working in the entertainment industry at a young age, and Demi admits that it proved to be a really valuable experience for her.

Demi told Who What Wear: "I had a blast working on Child Star. But I also did a lot of healing for myself to be able to come out of that experience with some tangible change that hopefully the rest of the country will follow suit on."

The chart-topping star subsequently became a political activist for children working in the entertainment industry in the US.

Demi - who is married to Jordan 'Jutes' Lutes - shared: "I kind of put [California Governor Gavin Newsom] on the spot. I was like, 'There's a bill that needs to be signed.' ... Then the governor called me the next day on my way home, and he said, 'All right!'"

Demi previously admitted that she found making the documentary to be a therapeutic experience.

The pop star - who appeared on Barney and Friends between 2002 and 2004 - told People: "The whole journey was really healing for me. Honouring the truth of my inner child was really healing for me.

"Going back and acknowledging my struggles was honouring my inner child and holding space for my younger self ... that didn't get to live a normal childhood in my younger years."

Demi spoke to the likes of Drew Barrymore, Kenan Thompson and Raven-Symone for Child Star. And the pop singer admitted that she enjoyed spending time with people who had gone through similar life experiences.

She said: "It really created a sense of community and it made us feel less alone to share our experiences, even though we may have felt so isolated in them. So I think being able to talk to the participants of the film really was encouraging and therapeutic for me."
