Consumer spending has been down for the first 14 days of December - 0.3 percent lower than last year

Worldline data shows the slide's affected most of the country, led by Wellington, where people spent four percent less than last year.

Food and liquor bucked the trend, with more transactions and more of higher value.

Overall spending is expected to pick up in the week to Christmas, peaking on Christmas Eve.
