Mid and Far North area prevention manager, Senior Sergeant Clem Armstrong, says they need around 20 new officers.
Certain South Island districts have a glut of applications and aren't accepting any new ones.
Mid and Far North area prevention manager, Senior Sergeant Clem Armstrong says recruits could get extra opportunities.
He says vacancies there mean spots in specialised areas of the police may be available.
