Almost a third of people in the Gisborne district are "hazardous drinkers" causing social harm and health problems to themselves and others

Almost a third of people in the Gisborne district are "hazardous drinkers" causing social harm and health problems to themselves and others

It's prompted authorities to support raising the drinking age from 18 to 20.

The move by Tairawhiti District Health Board brings it in line with other health authorities that want alcohol-related harm reduced.

The Local Democracy Reporting Service reports the DHB is advocating for increasing the purchase age of alcohol from 18 to 20, increasing alcohol taxes, reducing alcohol advertising and reducing trading hours of alcohol premises.

DHB chief executive Jim Green says the board endorsed a similar statement in 2013, but it wasn't publicised.
