Emergency management is keeping a close eye on South Westland as heavy rain continues to fall across the area

A wash-out caused by a extreme weather has closed State Highway 6 from Ross to Franz Josef.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area, with the road to remain closed until at least 8 in the morning when an assessment will be made.

West Coast Emergency Management regional director Claire Brown says the Hokitika River is rising, and some local roads have sustained damage.

Ms Brown is encouraging people to stay home.
