Virgin Australia flight crew allegedly assaulted, robbed in Fiji, police say

Police in Fiji are investigating the alleged assault of two Virgin Australia crew members during a night out on New Year's Eve in the tourist town of Nadi.

Police in Fiji are investigating the alleged assault of Virgin Australia crew members during a night out on New Year's Eve in the tourist town of Nadi.

Fijian authorities said the alleged incident involving two crew members, a man and a woman, occurred outside the Bar One nightclub in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Assistant Police Commissioner Mesake Waqa said the man was robbed and the woman was sexually assaulted.

In a statement on Facebook, Fiji's Tourism Minister Viliame Gavoka said a suspect in relation to the alleged sexual assault had been questioned.

He said the two crew members were "in good health" and were being accommodated at a Fiji hotel used by airline staff for layovers.

Mr Gavoka said the Virgin staff had been advised by Virgin management to stay within the hotel area so they could assist police with their investigations.

"They should return home before the end of the week," he said.

The male Virgin staff member was earlier taken to hospital and treated for facial injuries.

A Virgin spokesperson said the airline was aware of the incident and "our focus is on the wellbeing of our team members affected".

A Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesperson said they were aware of the incident but due to privacy obligations they couldn't comment further.

Acting Police Commissioner Juki Chew Fong said the suspects were locals and no arrests had been made yet.

He told local media that police were committed to providing visitors a safe environment this festive season.

Mr Gavoka said incidents like the alleged assault and robbery in Nadi could happen anywhere and Fiji was "not immune".

"We, as always, remind tourists to exercise caution in nightclub areas and late at night," he said.

The alleged incident is more bad news for Fiji's tourism industry after seven people, including four Australian tourists, were hospitalised after drinking the same cocktails at a resort last month.

The cause of the poisoning remains a mystery.

Fiji's authorities said tests on drinks at the Warwick Resort found no traces of methanol but the results of the samples taken from the patients poisoned have not been released.
