Coco Jones paid tribute to Whitney Houston with her Super Bowl outfit

The 28-year-old singer performed Lift Every Voice and Sing before the game between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots on Sunday (08.02.26), and she and designer Karl Kani sought inspiration from the late I Will Always Love You hitmaker's iconic 1991 tracksuit at the NFL showpiece game.

She told Entertainment Tonight: "I'm really excited for people to see those resemblances.

"Karl and I, I had him help me to design this. He's the godfather of hip-hop and fashion. I'm excited for him to get to have his moment with this."

The streetwear pioneer was "overwhelmed" to have been asked to work on Coco's outfit.

    He told Essence: "I'm overwhelmed.

"They could have gone to any designer in the world-Gucci, Fendi, Prada. But they came to Karl Kani. To pay homage to streetwear and to a brand that meant everything to me, that's something special.

It speaks to the resilience it took for us to be here, 35 years later, with a brand that started on the streets of Brooklyn.

"For so long, people said streetwear was just a fad, the same way they said hip-hop wouldn't last. But we're still here."

Coco donned a white, cropped zip-up athletic jacket which featured a red stripe alongside the chest and her right arm, as well as the same interior lining from Whitney's outfit, and a mini bubble skirt with a sweeping train.

Karl said: "It kept that athletic feeling but elevated it into something elegant and dramatic..."

The Bel-Air actress previously spoke of how honoured she felt to have been asked to perform at the Super Bowl.

Speaking during AppleMusic's press conference last week, she said: "I've had some amazing performers precede me and I think realising that I've been chosen and so I deserve the moment.

"I deserve the opportunity. And just kind of speaking positively, so you don't think about the pressure. You just think about the honour that it is."

Coco had planned to focus on the lyrics of the song.

She said of her preparations: "I feel like with Lift Every Voice, there's so much hope and tenacity that I relate to, and everyone does in their own journeys.

"So really listening to the lyrics, really sitting and feeling what they mean to me and then naturally reacting to that."
