Research published in the European Heart Journal says AI can analyse results from routine breast screenings, to detect calcium deposit build up in breast arteries.
It says women with moderate calcification are 70-percent more likely to suffer a serious heart event, while the risk is two to three times higher for severe calcification.
Researchers say policy-makers should consider implementing this into routine screenings, because it doesn't need extra infrastructure.
Health New Zealand's currently exploring using AI to support breast screening services.
