Auckland Council is working out its next step after Myrtle rust was spotted on a threatened plant in the Waitakere Ranges

Auckland Council is working out its next step after Myrtle rust was spotted on a threatened plant in the Waitakere Ranges

Two ramarama trees have been infected by the fungus, which can cause deformed leaves, stunted growth, and is spread by particles in the wind.

Auckland Council member Richard Hills says although the risk is low, a biosecurity team has put a cordon around the trees while they decide the next step.

He says there's no cure at this stage, and the trees may be removed, or cut back and monitored.
