Sigourney Weaver's appreciation for her husband has deepened over time

The 76-year-old star met Jim Simpson, 69, in 1983 at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in New York, where she was acting, and he was directing and bartending, and the pair went on to marry in October 1984, and co-founded The Flea Theatre in 1996, where he worked as its artistic director.

Sigourney - who, for many of those years, had travelled alone for work - told AARP: "My husband was running a theatre for over 20 years in New York, and he was never able to go on any jobs with me."

In 2015, Jim retired as artistic director at The Flea Theatre, and now he ensures to accompanies Sigourney - whose illustrious career has taken her to places, including New Zealand for the Avatar film series.

She said: "Avatar goes on forever, and since he's a surfer, this was heaven to him to come out here [to New Zealand]."

The Alien star relishes every second she spends with her beloved Jim.

Sigourney continued: "I think that you really realise how lucky you are to have found a sort of soulmate, and it's fun to have some time when your kids are grown up and in between jobs.

"It's not that you want to change people, but people do change, and it's fun to keep getting to know them."

Elsewhere, the award-winning actress - who, with Jim, has a 35-year-old child called Shar Simpson, who identifies as non-binary - says she and Jim's open communication and her husband's "aloha" are the secrets behind their strong marriage.

In 2023, Sigourney told Red magazine's September issue: "Honestly, it's such a huge leap of faith! Of course, you have to work at it and be willing to communicate, and you have to marry the right person, but you're also taking a huge gamble.

"I just feel so fortunate that I married someone with so much 'aloha' because I lead a weird life."

The couple leads a "very boring life", and Sigourney prefers to maintain a low profile and stay out of the spotlight when she is not working.

Sigourney said: "I try not to be in the public eye very often. When I have a wonderful project to support, I go all-out, but in general, we actually live a very boring life.

"Happily, we enjoy doing the same things. We love the outdoors, and we're always talking about going walking around Britain because we love that rugged stuff."
