The Maori Council has hopes for a change in the the Crown's relationship to the Treaty, after a royal visit to Waitangi today

The Maori Council has hopes for a change in the the Crown's relationship to the Treaty, after a royal visit to Waitangi today

Historically, the Crown relinquished power to the Government around Treaty negotiations.

But Maori Council executive director Matthew Tukaki says Prince Charles has "his own mind' and he hopes he'll break tradition and govern differently when he's King.

About 200 people have gathered to welcome the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall - who are due to arrive at the Treaty Grounds about 12.30.
