A Queenstown hiking company is working with authorities following the death of a hiker on the Routeburn Track

A Queenstown hiking company is working with authorities following the death of a hiker on the Routeburn Track

Police say a 70 year-old Australian man died after falling between Lake McKenzie Hut and Routeburn Falls Hut yesterday afternoon.

The man had been part of a multi-day guided walk with Ultimate Hikes.

Police, WorkSafe and the Department of Conservation have been notified.

Ultimate Hikes general manager Noel Saxon says weather conditions were wet and windy but not considered unsafe to walk.

He says they're now focused on supporting his family, the other walkers in the group and staff.
