A council's decision to introduce Maori wards can no longer be vetoed

A council's decision to introduce Maori wards can no longer be vetoed

A Bill to establish Maori Wards has passed its third and final reading at Parliament, with 77 in support and 43 against.

Local polls with five or more percent can no longer overturn a council's decision to introduce them.

Local Government Minister Nanaia Mahuta says it's a step forward in improving decision-making in our country.

She says Maori who are participating at whatever level of local government, want the best for the whole community, and do not operate in a vacuum..

Judith Collins says National will repeal the legislation when it gets back into Government.
