Firefighters have managed to contain a house fire in Motueka, near Nelson

Crews were sent to Selwyn Street just before 6am after multiple calls from the public.

Fire and Emergency says the blaze was well alight when they arrived, but everyone had escaped safely.

Southern communications shift manager Alex Norris says five fire trucks and one tanker are there.

He says crews from Kaiteriteri, Mapua, Motueka and Nelson are still on scene.

Norris says the fire's been contained but crews are still working to fully extinguish it.
