Criticism of the justice system, over inconsistency in the way it deals with neurodiverse individuals

Criticism of the justice system, over inconsistency in the way it deals with neurodiverse individuals

An new book out of Auckland University shows those with neurological challenges such as autism, fetal alcohol syndrome, ADHD or brain injuries, are disadvantaged in court.

Co-author Professor Michael Henaghan, says the justice system is designed for people with strong verbal skills, which impacts access to justice.

He says the Youth and District Courts are leading the way, for developing solutions with their Young Adult List pilot.

It provides a separate court list, and wrap around support, for special needs.

Henaghan says it shows improvements are possible.
