Gloria Gaynor has urged young women to "save something for your man"

The 81-year-old singer is proud that her 1978 anthem 'I Will Survive' has recently enjoyed a resurgence on TikTok and she hopes the track will encourage new fans to be "real women" who are happy with who they are inside

She told us Weekly magazine: "It makes me know about my foresight because when I first heard the lyrics to the song, all of this is what I imagined.

"I want to see them being real women who are pleased with who they are inside and not feeling that they have to show everything they have on the outside. Save something for your man. Save something for that special guy, something."

Gloria has heard multiple covers of the track, but Chantay Savage's version is her favourite.

She said: "It's completely different from mine. She really made the song her own and I love her for that," she shared.

Gloria is the focus of new Lifetime TV movie 'I Will Survive: The Gloria Gaynor Story' and the disco legend - who was married to her manager, Linwood Simon, from 1979 until 2005 - explained it celebrates "female power".

She said: "It's wonderful. It's wonderful. It's all about women, female power. Someone said to me, they were telling their wife, 'You've got to listen to me because you are the weaker sex.' And they heard God say, 'You have to have weak before you can get weaker.'

"It's all about women power and recognising the power that we have. Not trying to overpower the man in your life, but recognise that you have a power that matches his and that the two of you can be very strong together."

These days, the 'I Am What I Am' hitmaker finds most of her happiness in her faith and her music.

She explained: "Going to church, studying the Bible, writing songs and seeing those songs come to fruition.

    "My happy place is home."
