Graham Shaw has been named to fill the role left vacant by Mark Hager's resignation last month.
Under Shaw, the Irish women's team has risen from 16th to eighth in the world.
They finished with silver at last year's World Cup.
Shaw was awarded the Irish sports manager of the year award, ahead of Grand Slam-winning rugby coach Joe Schmidt.
He'll start on May 1, with his first match in charge on June 1 against the USA in Pennsylvania.
