Police say they did interview the alleged gunman's references face-to-face before granting his firearms licence

They say the accused filed for a firearms licence in September 2017, from Dunedin.
He listed a family member as one of his referees - but that person did not reside in New Zealand.
Two other referees were offered up who police say met the requirements.
Officers also visited the alleged gunman at his home in Dunedin, and a security inspection took place.
Police say they're confident the whole process was correct and proper.
