A huge number of New Zealanders missed out on the 2018 Census

But Government Statistician Liz MacPherson says it doesn't mean the whole project's a write-off, as they've managed to fill a lot of gaps using government data.
MacPherson says the extra data - reduces the people unaccounted to 58-thousand.
It means some stats like household and family information is likely to be of lower quality than in previous Censuses.
