A Canterbury school teacher who had sexual relations with an underage girl has been warned he faces a lengthy stint behind bars

The teacher, in his 40s, admitted sexual offending described by the judge as "very serious", at Christchurch District Court this afternoon.

The girl was 14 at the time.

    The man was refused bail.

He's been granted interim name suppression, and remanded in custody.

He is due to be sentenced in September.
