Researchers are hoping the drugs could help autistic youngsters focus better at school, interact more comfortably and hold down a job.
Axial Biotherapeutics' Dr Stewart Campbell says the powder-form drugs could mop up or change the behaviour of some gut metabolites.
He says studies show children with autism produce high levels of these metabolites - that were lower or not present in other children.
Autism New Zealand says it supports exploratory research.
The carbon-based drug will be tested first in 25 Auckland children, followed by studies on a pro-biotic.
