The 35-test representative has passed away after a battle with cancer aged 48.
Pongia forged a reputation as one of the game's most feared players during his 13-year career, which involved 137 NRL appearances and a premiership victory with Canberra in 1994.
New Zealand Rugby League Chief Executive Greg Peters says Pongia was an icon of the game and a great bloke.
