The hard-nosed forward died yesterday after a battle with cancer, aged 48.

Frank Endacott first spotted him when he was 16 playing first grade club football for Riccarton in Christchurch.

Endacott would go on to coach him in the Kiwis through the mid to late 1990s.

He says he was the toughest individual he's seen.

Endacott says saying his goodbyes to Pongia was difficult.
