Society needs to step away from preconceived ideas of what a healthy body is

A joint study between Otago and Victoria universities finds patients don't want doctors calling them fat or obese, but rather terms including weight or high BMI.
Otago University senior lecturer Lesley Gray says it shows what could be deemed stigmatising or discriminatory when addressing weight management.
She says people rely too much on measures like the Body Mass Index ... high or low weight doesn't always mean ill-health.
Gray says the terms we think are good for conveying weight, aren't necessarily helpful, or healthful.
