The Government is encouraging furniture makers to stop using highly flammable foam

The Government is encouraging furniture makers to stop using highly flammable foam

About 80-percent of new and existing household furniture is filled with foam, including lounge suites, seats and many mattress brands.

These catch fire at low temperatures, burn quickly and intensely, and emit poisonous gases.

Consumer affairs minister Kris Faafoi says the Government is giving retailers and manufacturers a chance to act, before it considers new regulations.

He's urging manufacturers to improve their production, and retailers to improve their labelling.
