The drug, Maviret, has been funded by PHARMAC since February.
The Health Ministry says the drug can potentially cure 99 per cent of people with the virus - regardless of what type of hepatitis C they have.
PHARMAC says it's not a cheap medicine - but when the benefits of expensive medicines are clear and substantial, it will move to fund them.
New Zealand has a goal of eliminating hepatitis by 2030.
