Yesterday it was announced developers have signed a 30-year agreement with Port Ruakura, a subsidiary of Tainui Group Holdings.
The port plans to develop nearly five-hundred hectares - including areas for cargo, logistics warehouses and employee housing.
It would mean Waikato businesses will have direct access to international shipping services in Tauranga.
Tainui Group Holdings chief executive Chris Joblin says this is a step towards the golden triangle, linking Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga.
