Nearly 120 people have been killed in quad bike accidents in New Zealand over the past 13 years

The provisional figures from the coroner's office show half of them died after being trapped under or crushed by the vehicle.

The accidents were dotted around farms, roads, driveways and beaches, and the age range spanned from 4 to 87.

It comes on the heels of coroner Brigitte Windley's call for a cross-sector working party to consider a mandatory quad bike safety standard.

Federated Farmers president Katie Milne says a lot of work has been done in recent years to get the message out about the potential dangers of quad bikes and they're seeing a cultural shift.

The number of annual deaths has dropped off in the past few years from a record high of 17 in 2016.
