The 53-year-old was sentenced in the High Court at Auckland today.
His wife, who is the elderly woman's niece, will discover her fate later this year.
The pair were caring for the woman full time - because of her acute dementia, incontinence, and immobility.
On a November morning in 2017, the niece found her aunt unresponsive and an ambulance was called.
Paramedics found the woman fused to the couch, covered in sores and faeces.
Ambulance staff couldn't separate her without further pain and injury - and were forced to cut the couch away before taking her to hospital.
