Sean Landy has been sentenced at the Porirua District Court to five-months' community detention and has been ordered to pay a one thousand dollar fine.
In 2017, Landy hit a Staffordshire bull terrier four times with a baseball bat, after it bit his daughter on the lips.
SPCA chief executive Andrea Midgen says it's a reminder that children's interactions with dogs should always be supervised.
She says dog attacks are a problem but beating an animal in a violent manner isn't the answer.
