Heavy rain has been causing surface flooding, with strong winds battering Auckland, Great Barrier Island, the Coromandel Peninsula and Bay of Plenty.
Fire crews were called to about 30 weather related call-outs in the space of 10 hours.
MetService says a deep low will travel south-east across the North Island today, before moving away to the east tomorrow.
Earlier, one person died when their yacht sank off Northland's Cape Brett.
Three others were winched to safety, after their 14 metre yacht floundered in choppy seas.
