Poulidor - or Pou Pou as the French public coined him - finished on the podium of the Tour de France eight times from 1962 to 1976, without winning the yellow jersey.
He was branded The Eternal Second due to his career coinciding with Jacques Anquetil and Eddy Merckx winning five tours each.
