51-year-old former finance director Fergus McMahon has been sentenced to community detention and a night curfew for the 22 separate thefts.
Court reporter Sam Hurley says the case has been suppressed due to the man's offending in Sydney ten years earlier, where he skinned rabbits he bought from pet stores and left them on the streets around his office.
Hurley says none of the Auckland pets were ever found so their fate is unknown - although he claimed during court that he wanted to release them back into the wild and free them from the clutches of their owners.
Hurley says McMahon has a history of drug use and mental illness.
